Height sentencing set for Oct. 29

SCRANTON – The sentencing for former Wilkes-Barre Area School Board member James Height on charges he accepted a bribe has been scheduled for Oct. 29.

Height, 53, pleaded guilty on May 29 to accepting $2,000 from a contractor in exchange for helping the contractor secure contracts in the Wilkes-Barre Area District and at the Wilkes-Barre Area Career and Technical School, on whose board Height also served.

Height is scheduled to appear for sentencing before U.S. District Judge Thomas I. Vanaskie at 2 p.m. at the federal courthouse in Scranton.

Guidelines call for a sentence of 12 to 18 months, but Vanaskie is not obligated to follow the guidelines and could sentence Height up to the maximum of 10 years in prison.
