SCRANTON – The Commonwealth Medical College, the region’s new medical school that opens later this summer, has received a $25,000 grant from PPL Electric Utilities Co. to help fund the new Medical Sciences building.
The building, currently under construction, will eventually serve more than 500 doctor of medicine and master of biomedical sciences students and 175 full-time equivalent faculty members, plus support personnel.
Located on Pine Street in Scranton, the building will include 185,000 square feet of space for classrooms, student support and research facilities.
“PPL recognizes the importance of supporting organizations such as The Commonwealth Medical College that will ultimately improve the health care and enrich the lives of the people who live and work in our community for many generations to come,” said Richard Beasley, PPL’s regional director.
For the academic years of 2009 and 2010, students will use temporary facilities on the Lackawanna College campus. The new $120 million building will open for students in 2011.
