RiverCommon will host RiverFest and sojourn

The RiverCommon is featuring a free two-day festival and sojourn on June 19, 20 and 21 to celebrate its dedication and grand reopening.

Combining forces with the Wyoming Valley WaterShed Coalition and RiverFront Parks, RiverFest will feature live music, artists, artisans, vendors and various exhibitors. There will be music by George Wesley, Don Shapelle, Woody Browns Project, SW!MS, Nowhere Slow, NonRefundables, K8 and Charles Havira. Featured will be live birds of prey, pony rides and a rock climbing wall.

Running the length of River Street, from the courthouse to the Wilkes University Dorothy Darte Center, RiverCommon’s attractions include a fishing pier, a quarter mile of paved walkways, gardens and ornamental forestry, a 750 person amphitheater with granite and levee seating and a grand common/garden area.

The music event kicks off Friday with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 4 p.m. and music and events, from 4 to 9 p.m. with the festival continuing Saturday, from noon to 9 p.m. The sojourn will feature four hours on the river, paddling from Harding to Wilkes-Barre on Saturday and from Nesbitt Park to Hunlock Creek on Sunday.

The new park adds to the Downtown Riverfront Park system which is composed of 91 acres of open space in Wilkes-Barre, Kingston and Edwardsville.

With an educational undertone, RiverCommon Park will help citizens reconnect with the Susquehanna River and educate on ways to reduce the area’s carbon footprint.
