SCRANTON - Attorneys for former Luzerne County judges Mark Ciavarella and Michael Conahan have been granted an additional two months to file pre-trial motions in the federal corruption case against them.

U.S. District Judge Edwin Kosik on Tuesday extended the deadline for the motions from Jan. 29 to March 1 at the request of Philip Gelso, attorney for Conahan, and Al Flora J., Ciavarella’s attorney.

Citing the complexity of the case, the attorneys sought the extension to provide them more time to review documents and conduct interviews of witnesses that federal prosecutors intend to call.

A federal grand jury in September issued a 48-count indictment against the ex-jurists, charging them with racketeering, bribery, money laundering and numerous other offenses.

The extension is the second Kosik has granted in the case. Kosik noted in his order that no further extensions will be granted.
