WILKES-BARRE – University Corners will add a retail tenant by mid-month when Tilbury’s Knob gift and jewelry store moves into a spot on South Main Street.
The store, which features handcrafted Native American jewelry, Minnetonka moccasins, Navajo rugs and Southwest blankets and wall hangings, is relocating from the Gateway Gardens Shopping Center in Edwardsville.
A message left at the store Thursday was not returned.
Tilbury’s Knob joins two other street-level tenants, Blue Chip Gourmet and Jannuzzi’s Pizza & Subs, in the downtown mixed-use property anchored by R/C Movies 14. The 14-screen theater opened in the summer of 2006.
The upper levels of the property located at South Main and East Northampton streets are being developed into 21 loft condominiums.
Filling the 30,000 square feet of street-level retail space in the $31 million project undertaken by the Greater Wilkes-Barre Chamber of Business and Industry has been a slow process.
The first tenant, a Quiznos sandwich shop franchise, closed its doors in March at the height of the economic crisis gripping the country, citing slow sales.
The chamber partnered with Carlsberg Management Co. of Los Angeles, Calif., last year in a deal that gave the real estate management company a three-quarters ownership share of the retail component of the property.
Susquehanna Real Estate of York has been developing the housing portion of the project.
