Commissioners exploring 30-day reassessment delay

WILKES-BARRE - Luzerne County Commissioner Chairwoman Maryanne Petrilla said she wants to meet as soon as possible with the county's reassessment team to discuss options for delaying the reassessment process by 30 days.

Petrilla said she believes there is a provision in real estate law that would allow the county to delay certification of property values by 30 days. Certification of the new values is currently set for Nov. 15.

Petrilla said a month's delay would give the county the "opportunity to make sure all appeals are heard."

Tony Alu, director of the county Assessor's Office, estimated that the county had received about 15,000 applications for assessment appeal hearings as of Tuesday. Officials had estimated they could hear up to 17,000 appeals by Oct. 31.

Petrilla said she will reach out Friday morning to the county's reassessment team to discuss the county's options.
