Rabender leads Patriots past Spartans

YATESVILLE — Jackie Rabender totaled 18 points to lead a Pittston Area offense that opened up the game in the second quarter, leading the Patriots to a 53-43 girls basketball victory over Wyoming Valley West on Tuesday.


Liz Waleski added 16 for Pittston Area in the Wyoming Valley Conference contest.


Megan Kane was the lone Spartan in double figures with 11 points.

King’s Mazzocchi tops MAC for week


King’s College senior wrestler Chris Mazzocchi has been named the Middle Atlantic Conference Wrestler of the Week.


In a 27-22 defeat at Elizabethtown, Mazzocchi won by a first-period pin in 2:34 for the Monarchs over Rafi Sayada. In a 53-4 loss at Delaware Valley, the MAC Tournament third-place finisher again excelled, posting a 14-0 major decision over Sekou Harris, missing a technical fall victory by one point.


This season, Mazzocchi has posted a 13-7 record. He was second at the Dolphin Invitational at College Mt. St. Vincent and third in the MAC Championships.

Ware nets Freedom honors


Misericordia University standout Steve Ware has been named the Freedom Conference co-Men’s Basketball Player of the Week.


A junior forward, Ware averaged a double-double with 23.5 points and 10.5 rebounds in a 1-1 week.


He shot 60 percent from the floor with 27 points and 12 rebounds in a 72-61 win over Wilkes and added 20 points and nine rebounds in a 68-60 loss at DeSales.
