SCRANTON — City police Officer John Wilding died early Sunday morning from injuries suffered while investigating an attempted robbery by three teenagers and charges will be filed in the death, a Lackawanna County prosecutor said.

Nasir Jones, Tanner Curtis and Isiah Edwards, all 17, are held in the Lackawanna County Prison, said Lackawanna County Assistant District Attorney Gene Talerico. The three face charges of robbery, conspiracy, terroristic threats, reckless endangerment and two of them face a charge of possession of a firearm by a juvenile, he said.

“We’re still conducting interviews relating to the robbery as well as the circumstances of the officer’s death,” Talerico said. Additional charges “will be coming forward ” related to the officer’s death, he added.

The Pennsylvania State Police are conducting the investigation, Talerico said.

The Scranton Police Department issued a press release announcing the loss of one its officers: “It’s with deepest regret and sadness to inform that Officer John James Wilding, a dedicated member of the Scranton Police Department since April 15, 2014, died at 1:28 a.m. this morning at Geisinger Community Medical Center as a result of injuries suffered in the line of duty on July 11, 2015.

“The members of the Scranton Police Department respectfully request that you keep Officer Wilding and his family in your prayers during this time of sorrow.”

Gov. Tom Wolf issued a statement Sunday afternoon:

“Frances and I offer our deepest condolences to Officer Wilding’s family, especially his wife and young children, and the Scranton Police Department. Officer Wilding lost his life fighting to make Scranton and Pennsylvania a better, safer place. That mission took his life far too soon but we will be forever indebted for his sacrifice and his bravery and service serves as an inspiration for us all.”

Police said a shotgun was involved in an attempted robbery of a man in 1300 block of Jackson Street at approximately 3 a.m. Saturday. The teenagers led officers on a chase that ended in the area of North Main Avenue. While in pursuit of the teenagers , Wilding reportedly leapt over a wall and fell 15 feet in the dark.
