Wyoming Valley West (7-1) at Pittston Area (2-6)
7 p.m. today
The Coaches: Valley West’s Pat Keating (38-15, 5th year); Pittston Area’s Mike Barrett (8-20, 3rd year)
Last Meeting: Valley West 40-7 in 2012
All-Time Series: Valley West leads 28-11
Quick Fact: Valley West has scored at least 34 points in the last seven meetings.
Scouting Valley West: The Spartans saw Hazleton Area drive right down the field on its opening possession for a field goal last Friday. Then they slammed the door on the Cougars 59-10. DB Mike Sands and LB Jordan Mason each returned interceptions for touchdowns in the win. The 103 rushing yards allowed broke a streak of two games where opponents failed to top 100. QB Mike Baur threw for two TDs and a season-high 204 yards to go over 1,000. RB Eric Acosta ran for two TDs and caught a pass for another.
Scouting Pittston Area: The Patriots enter off a 50-0 loss to Berwick. It was their worst loss since a 56-0 pasting by Hazleton Area in Week 7 of the 2007 season. Obviously, there weren’t a lot of positives to glean from a 50-0 loss. The defense got burned for a couple long touchdown passes in the second quarter and the entire second half was played with the mercy rule. The run defense surrendered 350 yards on the ground, its worst effort since allowing 510 to Crestwood in Week 3.
What To Expect: A one-sided game appears very likely. And, obviously, everything tilts toward Valley West to be a big winner. The Spartans are in the D2/4-11 Class 4A playoffs, but still need to win out to get a possible home game in the first round.
