Montrose (1-8) at Northwest (7-2)
7 p.m. today
The Coaches: Montrose’s Russ Canevari (3-26, 3rd year); Northwest’s Carl Majer (41-24, 6th year)
Last Meeting: Montrose 19-7 in 2012
All-Time Series: Tied 2-2
Quick Fact: Northwest rushed for a season-low 76 yards in last year’s loss.
Scouting Montrose: Montrose enters off a 34-0 loss to Lackawanna Trail. It was the sixth time this season the Meteors failed to score. However, they did play tough until midway through the third quarter. Montrose’s only victory was 41-14 against Holy Cross, which is considered District 2’s weakest program. RB Billy Hewes leads an offense that relies heavily on the running game. RB Trevor Tompkins will get a handful of carries as well. QB Patrick Parks is more of a game manager since the Meteors rarely throw the ball. Montrose has allowed 34 or more points in seven games.
Scouting Northwest: The Rangers are gaining plenty of momentum heading to the D2-A playoffs and they’ll need it. They’ll be at powerful Old Forge in the first round. Northwest completely dominated Wyoming Area last Friday, starting midway through the third quarter. The Rangers scored the last 35 points in the 55-13 rout. WVC leading rusher Austin Mazonkey battered his way to 239 yards and three TDs. WR Nick Long hauled in his ninth TD pass of the season, and the defense forced four turnovers and allowed just one TD. The other came via kick return.
What To Expect: Baring unforeseen outcomes in the D2-A playoffs, this will be the last time the Rangers will play on their home field this year. Expect them to give the home crowd plenty to cheer about.
