About Abington: The Comets avenged their only loss of the season by defeating Scranton Prep 31-26 in the semifinals. They have won eight district titles — the Class 3A championship in 2005, 2009, 2010 and 2012 and the Class 4A championship in 1998, 1999, 2001 and 2006.
Abington is 7-1 in District 2 championship games, with the only loss a 3-0 setback to Berwick in the 2008 Class 3A game. One championship was decided by state points in 2005 when District 2 and District 11 formed a subregional tournament in Class 3A. The Comets have won five districts titles under Repshis. The four times they advanced to the state playoffs, they failed to win their opening-round game, including a 23-0 loss to D11 champ Allentown Central Catholic last year.
About Berwick: The Dawgs are playing for a D2-3A title for the 11th time, with the only losses coming last year to Abington Heights and 28-24 in 2007 to a West Scranton team that featured current Oakland Raiders quarterback Matt McGloin. Eight of the D2-3A title have come under Curry, with the last in 2004. Berwick won the D2-3A championship in 2008 under coach Gary Campbell Jr.
Berwick won five consecutive district titles from 1994-98, the most in a row by any District 2 team since 1994 when the PIAA mandated that district playoffs were the only way to make the state tournament. The next closest is Lackawanna Trail, which won four consecutive D2-A championships from 2002-05. The Dawgs have gone on to win a record six Class 3A state titles, the last coming in 1997.
