KINGSTON — The Wyoming Valley Conference Girls Soccer Senior Classic served as an opportunity for two sets of seniors to end their high school careers on a positive note.
Both the Lake-Lehman and Crestwood seniors had unsettling finishes to their seasons. Playing for two of the most experienced teams in the conference, they made the best of their last opportunities by leading the Pink team to a dominating 7-2 victory Monday over the Kiwi squad at Wyoming Seminary’s Nesbitt Stadium.
The Lake-Lehman seniors — Shoshana Mahoney, Kaylee Hillard, Emily Sutton and Kendyl MacLean — were able to brush off a near chance to make the District 2 semifinals for the third straight season. Lake-Lehman’s season ended in remarkable fashion when Coughlin scored a game-winning goal in the final minute for a 2-1 victory.
“I didn’t know what to expect because they’ve never had this game before,” Mahoney said. “It was fun because it was just very relaxed out there. We executed our goals and went ahead early.”
Mahoney scored the first two goals of the game for the Pink team. She wasted no time putting her team ahead with a breakaway chance put in the back-right corner in the 5th minute. Mahoney gathered possession of a ball deflected off a Kiwi defender and arced it into the net in the 29th minute for a 2-0 lead. The forward even got to play in goal late in the game.
“It’s a good feeling to have even been selected to play with the conference seniors,” Mahoney said. “It’s even better than I was able to play with my teammates. We’ve all been playing together for a long time. We stayed together.”
Hillard also added a goal toward the end of the first half. MacLean, a Northwest student who plays on Lake-Lehman, found the back of the net in the 67th minute.
The Crestwood seniors were playing for similar redemption after missing out on the postseason. Hampered by injuries a year ago, the Comets returned a healthy, senior-laden squad. An overtime loss to Holy Redeemer ended all hopes of District 2 playoffs, though.
“We thought we were going to make the playoffs this season because we had everyone back,” Crestwood’s Rachael Lackenmier said. “But that didn’t happen. Even still, it was great to get out on the field for one last time.”
Gabby Termini netted two goals for the Pink team. She connected with teammate Lackenmier for her first goal in the 31st minute to go ahead by three goals. Termini had the goal of the night in the 54th when she launched a ball from 35 yards out that sailed into the corner of the net.
Lackenmier finished with three assists. The Comets’ Autumn Atkinson had an assist on a corner kick to Meyers’ Riley Conahan. Meg White starred in goal.
“It’s nice to play a final game with my teammates,” Lackenmier said. “I don’t really get emotional over things like sports. This is my first full season because I was set back by leg problems. So it was great to be out there.”
Both teams allowed Crestwood’s Allison Kachel, unable to play due to an injury, start the game and finish her career with the opening kick.
GAR’s Bre Mosier and Madisen Nichol saw playing time against girls for the first time in two seasons. GAR cut its girls soccer program during the sport’s switch to the fall in 2012, and Mosier and Nichol played with the Grenadier boys for the past two seasons.
Tunkhannock’s Cheyenne Brown and Pittston Area’s Sara Ruby had late goals for the Kiwi team.
