WILKES-BARRE – Connor Thole took a brief glance at the scoreboard and shook his head.

The Holy Redeemer sophomore just finished first in the backstroke, three seconds ahead of his closest competitor, Wyoming Seminary’s Andrew Levandoski.

“I would have liked a faster time,” the swimmer said.

Yes, it’s fair to say Thole has some pretty high expectations for his sophomore season.

Thole had two first-place finishes and was also part of the winning 200 medley relay team, but the numbers caught up to Holy Redeemer as Wyoming Seminary knocked off the Royals, 101-57, on Tuesday.

In the girls’ meet, the Royals got two strong diving performances from Marlee Mierzwa and Riley Williams en route to a 124-57 victory.

“I know that Redeemer didn’t have a large team on the boys’ side, and I was proud of the way our girls swam,” Seminary head coach Philip Mercatili said. “I wish we would have swam a little better but the weather has been pretty tough on our schedule. I think a lot of our kids are just mentally and physically exhausted at this point. Hopefully, we can rebound from it for the rest of the week.”

Thole learned a lot from his freshman year at districts.

Primarily a sprinter, he finished in the top 10 in both the 50 and 100 free at the Class 2A district meet.

“Last year, I was really looking forward to the 50 free,” Thole said.

This year?

“The 100 back is really getting there,” he said. “Last year, it was about the sprinting, and that’s what people were looking at me for. Everyone was like that I was a sprinter with the 50 free and 100 free. I’ve grown a little this year, and I’ve gotten stronger. I’m seeded pretty high right now in the back, and I want to see how high I can go. This season, it’s my best event. Last year, I was looking toward the 50 free. But this year, the 100 back is looking better and better.”

His 50 free isn’t too shabby, either. He swam a 23.81 yesterday, ahead of his district time from last year.

But his focus is the backstroke. Last year’s winning time at districts was 53.65. Returning district silver medalist, Crestwood’s Joseph Grzech swam a 55.25, and is expected to be one of the favorites in the event.

Thole is hoping to shave those seconds off in practice, where he’s made the biggest improvements.

“I’m working hard in practice, and I will admit, that’s the biggest change for me. I was sluggish in practice last year, and I wasn’t going hard to build up for meets,” Thole said. “This year, I am giving it everything I have. I want to make a name for myself this year.”

The Royals did everything in their power to beat Seminary in the boys’ meet.

But the numbers were just too much to overcome.

While Redeemer won almost every individual event, the second- and third-place finishes just weren’t there. Michael Dubinski, Thole and Jason Hauze each won two events, and were part of the winning 200 medley relay team.

Seminary’s Andriy Malchanov (diving) and Qian Yang (100 free) each had individual victories.

“We have some talented swimmers, and we are hopeful they will do some great things at districts,” Redeemer head coach Mara Pawlenok said. “It’s just numbers right now, and we are getting beat because of lack of bodies. It’s unfortunate, but they are still working hard.”

The Royals dominated the girls’ side of the meet, winning every event except the 200 medley relay.

Mierzwa and Williams each put up strong scores in diving, posting numbers in the 190s.

“Riley and Marlee kind of push each other and go head-to-head,” Pawlenok said. “They push each other to some wonderful scores, and are working to perfect their dives each meet. They are each other’s best supporters and cheerleader.”

Kellen Katra, Lucy Reilly and Emily Easton each had two first-place individual finishes for Redeemer.
