Fifty-eight Wyoming Valley Conference wrestlers will participate in the Northeast Regional Tournament this weekend. Those wrestlers had their first chance to see what their respective brackets look like Sunday, when the pairings were released.
Many of those WVC wrestlers may have been surprised to see the pairings.
Despite crowning 20 champions over the weekend, only three WVC wrestlers earned a No. 1 seed — Lake-Lehman’s Austin Harry (132 pounds, Class 2A) and Derek Dragon (170 pounds) and Dallas’ Ryan Monk (285, Class 3A).
The other 10 D2 champions from the WVC in Class 2A earned No. 2 seeds, but only one of the other seven 3A champs picked up a second seed — Coughlin 126-pounder Bobby Hawkins.
The District 2 Class 2A champions from the WVC to be seeded at the bottom of their weights are Meyers’ Colin Pasone (106) and Gino Setta (145); GAR’s AJ Luton (113), Zac Faust (220) and Saul Wilkins (285); Wyoming Area’s Pat Heck (120), Charlie Johnson (126) and Zachary Briggs (152); and Lake-Lehman’s Bobby Wright (160) and Brady Butler (182).
The Class 3A Northeast Regional consists of District 11 and D12, in addition to D2. The district champions are seeded based on winning percentage and prestige points, such as his highest place finish in state tournaments from previous years. The difference of getting one of the top two seeds or No. 3 is that the first two get byes in the preliminaries.
There are 29 WVC qualifiers in each classification. The impressive stat about that number is that only the top three from districts in 2A qualify, while the top four in 3A advance.
Only two unbeatens are in the Class 2A regional. They are Athens freshman Brian Courtney (26-0) at 106 pounds and Williamson junior Billy Barnes at (36-0) at 145.
In the Class 3A regional, the only unbeatens are from District 12 — St. Joe Prep’s Sean Lyons (30-0, 106 pounds), Father Judge’s Joe Galasso (20-0, 145), Monsignor Bonner’s Joe Dephillippo (32-0, 152) and Northeast’s Jamall Powell (28-0, 160).
