On behalf of the United Way of Wyoming Valley, I thank all those who participated in the 26th annual Christmas in July Food Drive Competition. The drive was a tremendous success and, for the second year in a row, a new collection record was set!
Thirty five organizations, their employees and countless community members rallied to collect donations equaling 90,537 pounds of food. This figure surpassed last year’s total by more than 13,000 pounds. Since the drive’s inception in 1989, 1,358,602 pounds of food have been collected to feed the hungry in the Wyoming Valley.
Special congratulations are in order for our top three winners in the overall weight category: Navient (37,686 pounds), Berkshire Hathaway GUARD Insurance Companies, and Benco Dental Supply Co.
A great job as well to the top three pounds-per-employee winners: Berkshire Hathaway GUARD Insurance Companies (67 pounds collected per employee), Choice One Community Credit Union, and Trion Industries.
Sadly, the need for the most basic and essential of items, such as food, still continues to be very prevalent in our community. Currently, one in three children under the age of 5 is living below the poverty line in Luzerne County.
The United Way believes that, together, we can impact these conditions. As we continue to lay the groundwork for the Poverty to Possibility movement, your support in helping to improve the odds for children and families in the Wyoming Valley will go a long way in changing the lives of many, not only now, but in the future.
Thank you for your continued support and for demonstrating what it means to “Live United.”
