Thank-you to all who aided project

Heartfelt thanks to all who supported the annual Memorial Day Foundation’s project to “Honor America’s greatest heroes with flowers …” at the National War Memorials in Washington, D. C.

Through your generous donation, volunteers placed 3,200 blood-red silk rose bouquets wrapped in a patriotic sleeve including your personal message.

A wreath of fresh flowers was worship-fully placed at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Arlington, Virginia followed by the bugler’s reverent Taps. The Wounded Warrior Project receives a portion of your donation.

Disabled voters comment shocking

As a resident of Luzerne County for all of my 73 years, except when I attended college and law school, I was shocked and embarrassed at the words the Election Board chairman used to insult handicapped voters.

It is unfortunate that St. Benedict’s Church in Wilkes-Barre is not accessible to handicapped voters in Luzerne County. Jeremy Packard, the Election Board Chairman, had no right on behalf of the community to comment that disabled voters are “gimpy people.”

Mr. Packard should take the easy way and resign from his office, as did the president of Ohio State when he made disparaging comments about the University of Notre Dame and Catholics in general. Public officials must be held to the highest standard as they reflect the thinking, attitude and concerns of the voters in our county, including handicapped individuals.

I recognize that this is a new form of government; however it goes without saying that unless some affirmative action on behalf of Mr. Packard is taken, the next round of elections for the sustaining of the County Council form of government will be seriously jeopardized.

I am sending a copy of this letter not only to Mr. Packard, but to each individual of the County Council and the newspapers of this community, so that they know the outrage that I personally and professionally have for the disparaging remarks about the disabled members of our community, which include disabled voters.
