SCRANTON – Today, U.S. Marshal Martin J. Pane announced that the United States Marshals Service (USMS) Fugitive Task Force arrested Michael Torres, 23, of Hazleton.

Marshal Pane stated, “The Fugitive Task Force team did an outstanding job bringing Torres to justice. There were many agencies involved and their coordination ensured that a suspected dangerous fugitive has been taken off our streets.”

In January 2014, the New York City Police Department began investigating a carjacking in Brooklyn. It is alleged that the assailants approached a vehicle and demanded its occupant of their personal effects at gunpoint. The assailants then forced the occupant out of the vehicle and proceeded to drive off in the victim’s car. The investigation later revealed that one of the assailants was Michael Torres.

On March 12, an arrest warrant charging Torres with the following crimes:

• 2 counts of Robbery in the first degree

• 3 counts of Robbery in the second degree

• 2 counts of Grand Larceny in the fourth degree

• 1 count of Criminal possession of stolen property in the fourth degree

The case was adopted by the New York/New Jersey Regional Fugitive Task Force (NY/NJ RFTF). NY/NJ RFTF believed Torres may have fled to the Hazleton area and sent an investigative lead to the Middle District of Pennsylvania Fugitive Task Force.

On March 13th, Deputy U.S. Marshals and Task Force Officers arrested Torres without incident at a business on Weis Lane in Hazleton. Torres was also being sought for questioning in connection with a 2013 homicide occurring in Brooklyn, New York. Torres was turned over to New York City Detectives for questioning and currently awaits his extradition back to New York.

The USMS worked jointly in this investigation with personnel from the Pennsylvania State Police, Pennsylvania Board of Probation and Parole, New York City Police Department, and NY/NJ RFTF members.
