When advertising representative Christie Delicati proposed the idea of running a readers’ poll, the rest of us who work at The Dallas Post didn’t know what to expect.
Our first inclination was to run – kicking and screaming – as far away from Christie as we could get. After all, our sister newspaper, The Abington Journal, has conducted a readers’ poll for the last two years and we’ve heard all about how much work it can be.
But, Christie was persistent – and passionate – eventually convincing the rest of us that “The Best of the Back Mountain” would be a hit. Boy, was she right!
Christie came up with 79 catregories that best represented the Back Mountain and we got entries in every single one of them.
With ties in three categories, we actually have 82 “Best of the Back Mountain” winners, all of whom received a plaque and a window decal at an awards reception held last Tuesday everning at Fire & Ice on Toby Creek. A Power Point presentation shown during the reception highlighted each one of our “best” winners.
We offered our readers who filled out ballots in the poll an opportunity to win $100 cash with Sharon Branco’s being the one selected from hundreds of entries.
Oh, we made mistakes along the way, believe me. But this was our first attempt and we expected that. We fixed each mistake as best we could as soon as we could and vowed not to make the same mistakes next year.
And there will be a next year!
With all the interest and enthusiasm created by “The Best of the Back Mountain,” we’d be crazy not to do it again. We’ll even make it bigger and better next time around.
The only difference will be that Christie isn’t going to have to twist our arms to convince us it’s the right thing to do. Our readers have already done that.
