Motorists are advised of a new exit designation, Exit 178, beginning tonight, Tuesday, March 25, on Interstate 81.
The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation said Exit 178A (Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Airport) and Exit 178B (Avoca) will be combined. Exit 178 (Wilkes Barre/Scranton Airport and Avoca) will be at the former Exit 178B. Exit 178A will be closed. The change will be permanent and will be on the northbound and southbound lanes.
This change is part of the $41.9 million Airport Reconstruction Project that began in June 2013 and is scheduled to be completed in November 2015. It includes widening of bridges on the interstate, rehabilitation of existing bridges over Lidy Road, state Route 315 and Plane Street, replacement of a pedestrian bridge over the interstate, construction of new exit and entrance ramps, three new roundabouts, construction of two new bridges and construction of a new roadway.
