State Rep. Phyllis Mundy said she recently submitted a letter to the Pennsylvania Real Estate Investment Trust requesting the organization reconsider its decision to ask the KISS Theatre to vacate its current location at the Wyoming Valley Mall in Wilkes-Barre.
The Wyoming Valley Mall owner gave notice earlier this month that the KISS (Kids Innovating Sound & Stage) Theatre Co., located in the mall’s former Great Escape cinema, had 90 days to vacate.
“I am disappointed to think KISS Theatre may not be part of the Wyoming Valley Mall in a few months,” Mundy said in a release. “It is so important to make sure we support groups like KISS Theatre, which provide a safe place for our children to learn, socialize and grow.”
Mundy, D-Kingston, said 500 local children currently participate in KISS Theatre programs, while 1,000 young people have been involved in the children’s theater over the past five years.
“What’s more, these children and their parents have faithfully patronized the mall’s stores and restaurants over the years. The Wyoming Valley Mall stands to lose this business if the theater relocates,” Mundy said. “While I can understand that businesses sometimes need to make difficult financial decisions, I do hope some type of compromise can be reached.”
