DICKSON CITY: The Northeast Pennsylvania Regional Bridge Building Competition will be held from 8:45 a.m.- noon on Feb. 12, 2011, in the Viewmont Mall, Dickson City.

All public and private schools in the northeast quadrant of Pennsylvania (from the New York border to the North, Shenandoah to the South, the Delaware River to the East, and Elkland, Bradford County, to the West) are encouraged to select three students to represent their school in the competition. Invitations have been mailed to all of the schools. Students should check with their teachers and/or administration to obtain the particulars. For more detailed information visit www.neparbdgblg.com.

The competition is co-directed by L. Edward Moody and Donald H. Kieffer. The objective of the competition is to provide an educational learning experience for secondary students to demonstrate their understanding of scientific and engineering principles and to encourage careers in science, technology, mathematics and engineering.

Students are invited to construct a model bridge designed and constructed from 3/32” basswood that meets specific criteria established each year by the International Bridge Building Committee. The first three place winners from each local competition are eligible to rebuild and improve their bridge design for the regional competition. The first and second place regional winners are eligible to compete at the International Competition in Chicago at the Illinois Institute of Technology at a later date.

Trophies and plaques are awarded to the first, second, and third place winners in the competition and certificates of participation and commemorative T-shirts are given to each participant in the regional competition. Trophies are also presented to the schools represented by the first, second, and third place schools. Participants are also eligible for scholarships to local colleges and universities when they are available. A special “Architectural Excellence” award, in memory of Tomas Kovall, an Abington Heights physics teacher who died after a short and courageous battle with cancer, will also be presented.

Sponsors for the competition are being sought and engineers are needed to help with the judging. Anyone interested in becoming a sponsor or a judge of the regional competition should contact Donald Kieffer at www.neparbdgblg.com; e-mail: [email protected]; phone: 570-586-0197; fax: 570-587-1154; or cell: 570-561-3286.
