RANSOM TWP.-Alliance Landfill has proposed to the state an expansion to their landfill that will stretch 87 acres between the Taylor Borough and Ransom Township; part of the landfill is currently in a small section of Ransom.

It’s their household budget that will be affected,” said Alliance Landfill community relations coordinator John Hambrose, about residents of Ransom Twp.

Currently, Ransom Twp. receives money from the landfill and residents of Ransom have free garbage pickup. If the proposal goes through, some perks Ransom residents and the township will receive are: continuation of free garbage pickup, an estimated $27.5 million in host fees that span over 20 years, money for development of a community center for Ransom, and $20,000 every three years to help purchase new police cars for the township. The host payment Ransom has received over the years is what has kept Ransom taxes from changing over the past 20 years.

“I’m sure with the approval of the landfill with the expansion there’s going to be more money available for the fire department on an annual basis; there’s going to be more money available for police protection,” said Ransom Twp. Chairman Joe Esposito. “These are all things that affect everybody directly.”

At the meeting of the Ransom Twp. Supervisors on Monday, Jan. 4, Esposito encouraged residents to attend the upcoming public hearing scheduled for Wednesday, Jan.13 at the Riverside High School in Taylor. Information about Alliance can be found on www.wm.com/alliance.
