Cub Scout Pack 21, charted by the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church located on Dundaff St. in Dickson City, will host the 2014 Dan Beard District Pinewod Derby Race on Saturday. The race begins at 12:30 p.m.
Cub Scouts from surrounding Cub Packs will converge on the LaSalle Dickson City Campus with their cars in tow. The boys will turn their cars over to the Boy Scout volunteers to be weighed and measured. Each car must not exceed a length of seven inches and cannot weigh more than 5 ounces.
Each car must be constructed of pine; the width, wheel and underbody clearance are also regulated. Once registered, the car is to remain untouched until race time. Each car will race four times on an aluminum track with electronic timers. The races will be divided by rank and age level.
The Pinewood Derby race started in 1952 when a Manhattan Beach, California father and scout leader, Don Murphy, wanted a father/son activity without waiting for the Soap Box Derby.
His fellow leaders followed his lead and created a 31-foot, two lane race track, complete with a battery operated finish line. The first race was on May 15, 1953 with Cub Scout Pack 280C.
