WILKES-BARRE — School will continue as usual for Coughlin High School students while construction crews further evaluate structural concerns inside and outside the building.

Wilkes-Barre Area School District Superintendent Bernard Prevuznak said Sunday that a safety fence, which was set up Saturday morning that blocks the school’s Union Street entrance and the main entrance along North Washington Street, is to remain in place for most of the week as a precautionary measure.

Structural concerns in an exterior courtyard area, in the library as well as around the main building’s parapet were brought to light during recent inspections, Prevuznak said.

There is no immediate safety risk, and the limited access is an attempt to maintain utmost safety conditions for students, he said.

An inspection of the some of the building’s aging interior structure led Prevuznak and the school’s construction manager, Apollo Group, to identify additional concerns with the building’s exterior, the superintendent said.

“Our concern was for the parapet on the inside (of the library) and structural disintegration with age on the inside,” Prevuznak said. “In examining this, we have some concerns about the outside of the building.”

The annex building entrance along North Washington Street and also doors below the bridge that connects the two buildings are to be open for students to enter school.

Coughlin parents are to be notified where their children may enter the school through the district’s Skylert communication system, and school employees will help direct students to the appropriate entrances until crews set up more permanent scaffolding around the building and the main doors are reopened.

That could be as early as Thursday, Prevuznak said.

The library is to remain closed until the end of the school year, June 12.
