Griffin Pond Animal Shelter will host the third annual “Friends of the Griffin Pond Animal Shelter” Motorcycle Ride to benefit the shelter.

The benefit ride will be held on Sunday, June 8 which begins at Electric City Harley Davidson, Rte. 6, Scranton, and ends at AJ’s Club Soda, 1017 Main St., Peckville, Pa.

Because of the generous support of the community over the last two years, the ”Friends of the Shelter” group has been able to provide monetary aid, which is used exclusively for vet care for the animals in care of Griffin Pond Animal Shelter. In effort to continue their mission of supporting the shelter, the group founders Nancy Vrable and Greg Mancuso intend to ride on again this year.

This year is particularly an important year for one of the motorcycle ride coordinators, Mancuso.

“My wife Barbara passed away on June 13, 2013, just days after the 2nd Annual Motorcycle Ride last year. This year I am dedicating the ride to Barbara in her honor as she was passionate about animals as well,” he said. “I am determined to help the shelter animals with the motorcycle ride again this year because the animals need people in our community to step up & facilitate events to provide veterinary care for them as they are helpless without the financial assistance.”

Griffin Pond Animal Shelter is the only animal shelter in Lackawanna County and also assumes animals from Wyoming County. The non-profit organization‘s mission is to investigate and prevent animal cruelty as well as promote responsible pet ownership while caring for many animals surrendered to the shelter as they strive to get the animals adopted into loving homes. The shelter provides shelter, food, and medical care for approximately 6,000 animals each year, which equates to an average of 500 different animals each month.

“The emergency vet fund is critical for Griffin Pond Animal Shelter to financially provide medical care for the homeless animals in our care that need vital medical treatments and procedures,” Griffin Pond spokesperson Jess Farrell said. “Each year, many animals are surrendered to our shelter each year because their owners cannot afford necessary veterinary services. We also assume responsibility for stray dogs that are injured in addition to abused animals that are surrendered or confiscated as a result of animal cruelty cases. ”

The motorcycle ride registration will take place at Electric City Harley Davidson in Dickson City between 10:00-11:30 a.m. Maps of the planned route will be provided during registration. The cost is $15/rider and $5/passenger. The motorcycle ride begins at noon and the riders will enjoy a scenic ride which ends at Aj’s Club Soda in Peckville.

A post ride cookout will follow the motorcycle ride at Aj’s Club Soda between 1 - 4 p.m. Everyone is invited to attend the cook out following the ride. Additionally, those who are not able to partake in the motorcycle ride are welcomed to attend the post ride cookout for a $5 donation which includes the food.

DJ Kryptonite will entertain the crowd at Aj’s Club Soda. Event t-shirts will be available for purchase at the event as well as tickets for over 30 raffle prizes, including one custom made Harley Davidson inspired dog house.

All proceeds generated from the event will benefit the veterinary care fund for Griffin Pond Animal Shelter. The registration fees for motorcycle ride will be collected at the event.
