WILKES-BARRE —A woman accused by Luzerne County detectives with providing false income in order to receive higher subsidized housing allowances was sentenced in county court.

Millicent Hazel, 49, last known address as Second Avenue, Kingston, pleaded guilty to theft by deception and false swearing.

Prosecutors withdrew a single count of false statements against Hazel.

Judge Joseph Sklarosky Jr. sentenced Hazel to four years probation.

Detectives said Hazel provided false income on Luzerne County Housing Authority income worksheets from January 2007 to December 2011 in order to receive a higher subsidized rental assistance for an apartment on Second Avenue in Kingston, according to the criminal complaint.

Detectives alleged in the complaint Hazel failed to list child support payments on the worksheets.

Hazel was overpaid $14,315 in rental and utility payments through the Section 8 housing program, the complaint says.

Sklarosky ordered Hazel to pay $14,315 in restitution to the county housing authority.
