WILKES-BARRE TWP. — A Bear Creek Township man thought he was going to be released on unsecured bail Wednesday when he surrendered on charges he sexually assaulted a teenage girl for several years.

Instead, Eric Robert Turinski, 42, was handcuffed and taken to the Luzerne County Correctional Facility for lack of $250,000 straight bail.

Turinski’s attorney, Demetrius Fannick, requested unsecured bail that was not objected to by state police at Wyoming, who filed the sexual assault charges.

District Judge Michael Dotzel overruled the bail agreement, imposing the high straight bail, citing Turinski’s arrest Tuesday night on unrelated physical assault charges that involved an ex-girlfriend.

Fannick said he will likely file a bail modification petition in county court seeking reduced bail for Turinski.

According to the criminal complaints:

A teenage girl told state police in September 2013 that Turinski sexually assaulted her at different locations in Bear Creek Township, Thornhurst in Lackawanna County and in his truck from April 2008 to July 2011.

Turinski told the girl not to tell her mother who would disown her, the complaint says.

The girl claimed Turinski made her smoke synthetic marijuana and gave her alcohol, which caused her to pass out. When she awoke, she stated there was semen on her body, according to the complaint.

State police allege in the complaint the girl confided with a high school friend and when she got older, she told two women she was sexually assaulted.

State police said they interviewed the two older women, who said the girl did tell them that she was assaulted by Turinski, the complaint says.

Dotzel set bail at $250,000, saying Turinski was arrested on physical assault charges Tuesday night.

State police charged Turinski with assaulting ex-girlfriend, Trudy Ann Smith, 38, of Bear Creek Township, after returning to his residence from Indian Lake Inn. Turinski said he defended himself when Smith came at him with a knife, the complaint says.

Turinski was charged with simple assault and harassment. He was arraigned early Wednesday morning by District Judge Ronald Swank in Wright Township and released on $5,000 unsecured bail.

Smith was charged with aggravated assault, simple assault, reckless endangerment and harassment for the alleged fight with Turinski on Tuesday night. She was released on $10,000 unsecured bail after she was arraigned by Swank.
