WILKES-BARRE — The owner of the deteriorating railroad bridge over the Susquehanna River will first have to pursue all means to pay for the demolition of the structure before Luzerne County steps in, a county official said.

Christopher J. Belleman, executive director of the Luzerne County Flood Protection Authority, said the county has funds set aside. But, he said, owner Leo A. Glodzik III has to exhaust all his resources to comply with the rules and regulations set forth by the state Department of Environmental Protection before the county gets involved.

The DEP notified Glodzik in April to either dismantle or repair the bridge between the Coxton Railroad Yard in Duryea and Exeter due to its poor condition.

“The funds are there, but they’re to be used as a last resort,” Belleman said.
