WILKES-BARRE — A man Hazleton police said shot another man on West Diamond Avenue pleaded guilty to a felony assault charge in Luzerne County Court.
John Carlos Paulino, 27, of North James Street, pleaded guilty to a single count of aggravated assault.
Judge Fred Pierantoni III said Paulino will be sentenced on Sept. 25.
According to the criminal complaint:
A witness, who was not identified, said he saw Paulino point a gun at Craig Orin Mason, put it away and leave on July 5, 2013. A few minutes later, Mason walked to the 600 block of West Diamond Avenue, out of sight of the witness.
A short time later, the witness said he heard three “pops,” went to investigate and found Mason lying on the ground. The witness asked what happened and Mason replied, “He shot me.”
Another unidentified witness said he was standing on the corner of West Diamond Avenue where it intersects with North James Street and heard three gunshots. He said he saw a gray or silver car traveling at a high rate of speed east on West Diamond Avenue and that there was a “J” in the license plate on the car.
Mason suffered two gunshot wounds to his abdomen. He survived his injuries.
Police said a PennDOT records’ check indicated Paulino owned a 2005 Subaru IR4 with Pennsylvania license plate JGL7361. A further check showed he had a concealed weapon’s permit and a handgun was registered to him.
