MOOSIC — The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre baseball club will kick off HOPE Week 2014 with its annual food drive at tonight’s 7:05 p.m. game against the Charlotte Knights. Fans are encouraged to bring non-perishable food items to be exchanged for a lawn seat in the NEPA Honda Homer Zone.
The Voluntary Action Center will distribute collected items to local food pantries.
On Monday, players, coaches and front office staff will visit Gino Merli Veterans Center in Scranton. The RailRiders will spend time with residents playing Wii baseball and eating baseball-themed snacks.
Then, at Tuesday’s game, the team will join the Vs. Cancer Foundation to raise money for childhood cancer research with a goal of $10,000. Some players and front office staff will shave their heads during and after the game.
Later in the week, the RailRiders will team with the Children’s Miracle Network, the NEPA Boys and Girls Club and the Make-A-Wish foundation for more events.
HOPE Week, which stands for Helping Others Persevere and Excel, began in 2009.
