Thousands of PPL Electric and UGI Utilities customers remain without electrical service Wednesday, a day after severe thunderstorms rolled through the region knocking down trees and utility lines.
UGI Utilities reported on its website that 14,484 customers in Luzerne and Wyoming counties are without service, and PPL Electric reported 2,136 customers in Luzerne County are without power.
Due to the power outage, Penn State - Wilkes-Barre campus in Lehman Township is closed on Wednesday. All summer camps at the campus are canceled.
The hardest hit in the region appears to be the Back Mountain, Sweet Valley and Harveys Lake areas, according to UGI’s website.
More than 2,200 UGI customers in Dallas Township, 2,000 customers in Harveys Lake, 1,591 customers in Ross Township, 1,244 customers in Dallas Borough, 1,112 customers in Huntington Township, 990 customers in Lehman Township, 967 customers in Union Township and 945 customers in Lake Township are without electrical service.
PPL Electric reports 1,163 customers in West Pittston and 862 customers in Exeter Township are in the dark.
In 27 counties PPL Electric services, 29,146 customers are without service.
The National Weather Service in Binghamton, N.Y., reports numerous trees toppled onto utility lines, houses and cars during the storm.
