WILKES-BARRE — City council tonight passed a resolution asking Mayor Tom Leighton to terminate the contract of LAG Towing that's been suspended for more than a year.
Councilman Tony George called for the termination and received the support of all four other council members at the regularly scheduled meeting. They requested that the termination be done within two weeks.
The mayor suspended the contract on May 31, 2013, after Leo A. Glodzik III was charged with theft by the Luzerne County District Attorney's Office.
Earlier this year a jury in county court found Glodzik guilty of one count of theft and acquitted him of another count. He will be sentenced Friday.
An arbitrator determined in January that the mayor had good cause to suspend contract because of the criminal charges filed against Glodzik. The arbitrator also said that with any disposition other than an innocent verdict the mayor also “will have good cause upon which to terminate the contract.”
