WILKES-BARRE — Two people were arrested after a pursuit with police that began near Public Square and ended near an on-ramp to Interstate 81 in Wilkes-Barre Township. A city police cruiser was damaged during the chase.
City police said they were assisting Kingston police in a traffic stop at West Market and Franklin streets at about 8:15 p.m. As officers exited their cruisers to approach the stopped vehicle, police said Denise Ziagos, 32, of Berwick, drove away initiating a pursuit.
Police stopped Ziagos on Highland Park Boulevard near the Interstate 81 on-ramp.
No injuries were reported.
Ziagos was arraigned Tuesday morning on charges of criminal conspiracy to commit aggravated assault, reckless endangerment, resisting arrest, disorderly conduct and reckless driving. She was also charged on unrelated charges with retail theft and criminal conspiracy. She was jailed at the Luzerne County Correctional Facility for lack of $17,500 bail.
A passenger in the vehicle, Michael Edward Haines, 27, of Dunmore, was charged with resisting arrest and disorderly conduct, and unrelated charges of criminal conspiracy to commit retail theft. He was jailed at the county correctional facility for lack of $12,500 bail.
