WILKES-BARRE — A construction crew replacing a storm water catch basin at Park Avenue and Moyallen streets ruptured an underground natural gas line at about 8 a.m. Friday.

UGI Natural Gas Utilities quickly responded to the leak shutting off the gas line just before 8:30.

At least two homes were evacuated by the city fire department, which stationed their fire apparatus vehicles and extended a hose line from a hydrant at Park Avenue and Hazle Street.

Park Avenue from Hazle Street to Hill Street was closed during the emergency.

Joe Swope, manager of communications for UGI Utilities, said the natural gas line was properly marked.

No injuries were reported.

Construction crews are placing storm watch catch basins while another construction crew is replacing sidewalks at intersections along Park Avenue.
