Fire crews work to douse hot spots at a house fire Saturday night along Green Street in Ashley, which left resident, Kimberly Krakauski, 65, dead.

ASHLEY — A 65-year-old woman perished in a house fire that broke out just before midnight Saturday along Green Street in Ashley.

Luzerne County Coroner William Lisman said Kimberly Krakauski was pronounced dead at 2:45 a.m. A medical examiner is to do an autopsy some time tomorrow, he said.

At this time, it’s too early to say if malicious activity caused the blaze and Krakauski’s death, Lisman said. When the coroner left the scene around 4 a.m., a state police fire marshall still was investigating.

Neighbors on the scene told one Times Leader employee Krakauski had recently undergone cancer treatments and was in poor health.

A Luzerne County Fire Companies Facebook post reported possible entrapment in a bedroom.

The fire first was called in at 12:08 a.m., a 911 supervisor confirmed. Crews from Nanticoke, Ashley, Hanover Township and Wilkes-Barre Township were called to fight the fire.
