Javier Miranda, 21, of Hazleton died from his injuries after he was struck by a vehicle while walking in the area of Broad and Pine streets late Saturday, after which the driver took off, police said.
According to a police report, officers were called to the scene at 11:40 p.m. for a reported hit-and-run.
Luis Jimenez Reyes of Hazleton was identified by city police as the driver who left the scene. Police picked him up later. He was arraigned on Sunday before District Judge Martin Kane of Wilkes-Barre on a charge of accidents involving death or injury. Kane set bail at $250,000 straight. Jimenez Reyes was committed to the Luzerne County Correctional Facility, Wilkes-Barre, where he remained on Sunday night.
When officers arrived at the accident scene, Miranda was lying in the street having suffered severe injuries, police said. The vehicle was not on scene, and Miranda was taken immediately to the hospital, police said.
Miranda was pronounced dead by a Luzerne County coroner’s office employee in Lehigh Valley Hospital-Hazleton just after midnight, Lisman said.
A black SUV, which police believe struck Miranda, was later discovered, and police took Jimenez Reyes into custody.
