DALLAS – An inmate at State Correctional Institution at Dallas was found dead in his cell on Thursday, Superintendent Lawrence Mahally reported in a news release.
Mahally said prison staff were conducting a security round on the housing unit when an officer observed inmate Israel Guzman hanging in his cell at approximately 1:30 p.m. Staff immediately responded and provided life-saving measures until facility medical personnel arrived.
Guzman was pronounced dead by a prison physician, Mahally said.
In accordance with state policy, state police were notified and will conduct an investigation. The official cause of death will be determined by the Luzerne County Coroner’s Office.
Guzman was serving six to 12 years for drug, manufacture/sale or possession with intent to deliver and criminal use of a communications facility in a case out of Lackawanna County. He was committed to the state Department of Corrections on April 11, 2007, and had been at SCI Dallas since December 4, 2013.
