Companies seek to

stop bus contracts

Two transportation companies said the Hazleton Area School Board did not
properly award the district’s bus contracts.

Officials from Lex Transportation and Zanolini School Busing Inc.,
including Mark Yurcho of Fern Glen, Lamar and Karen Lex of Weston and Jeffrey
Zanolini of Sybertsville have asked the Luzerne County Court of Common Pleas
to stop the contracts, which were awarded Aug. 6.

Named in the motion with the School District and School Board are Martini
Inc.; Evancho Bus Co. Inc.; Ralph Bley, David Bott, Michael Bott and William
Gerhardt, individually and doing business as County Coach; Joseph Deluca;
Carol Deluca; Jeffrey Knelly; and Clyde Spiece.

According to paperwork filed Monday, the contract was to be awarded to the
“lowest responsible bidder.” However, the School Board ignored the rule “by
allegedly designating the successful bidders based upon the model year of the
buses.”

A court date has been scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Friday in the Bernard C.
Brominski Building in Wilkes-Barre.

Hazleton Area Solicitor Anthony Lucadamo and Donald G. Karpowich, counsel
for the plaintiffs, could not be reached for comment.

Fire at waste center

was arson, chief says

Hanover Township Fire Chief Stanley Browski said arson was the cause of a
fire at the Waste Reduction & Recycling Center on Sunday night.

Firefighters from Hanover Township and surrounding departments battled the
blaze from about 11 p.m. Sunday and into the night. Browski said flames
covered an area filled with wooden pallets, compost material and
industrial-sized bins filled with wood.

Browski said the fire was started at multiple points.

He did not think it was related to a fire that destroyed nearly 1,000
wooden pallets and two buildings at the Rapid Pallet company in Jermyn on
Saturday night.

Woman hospitalized

after house fire

A Kingston woman was hospitalized Tuesday after escaping an early morning
fire at her Chestnut Avenue home, fire officials said.

Four people were inside the home when the fire started at about 2 a.m.

Mary Ellen Burns was admitted to Wilkes-Barre General Hospital early
Tuesday for smoke inhalation, a hospital spokeswoman said.

Firefighter James Decker was admitted to Wilkes-Barre General and treated
in the emergency room and moved to the heart unit Tuesday, a hospital
spokesman said.

The fire appears to have started in the attic, said Kingston Fire Chief
Robert Cannon. The attic and the roof were damaged in the blaze and the second
floor sustained heavy water and fire damage, he said.

Joe Zinkavich, a next door neighbor, said flames shot up from the roof of
the house at least 40 to 50 feet. The siding on Zinkavich’s home also was
damaged during the blaze, he said.

Cannon said more than 40 firefighters from Kingston, Forty Fort and Luzerne
responded to the fire.

The investigation is ongoing, the fire chief said.
