Jaclyn M. Fowler, D.Ed., has been hired as vice president of MMI Preparatory School as of July 1. Fowler replaces Thomas G. Hood, who assumed the position of president after the retirement of President William A. Shergalis, Ph.D., on Aug. 3. Fowler served as state director for the Pennsylvania Governor’s Schools of Excellence. She is an online faculty member with the University of Phoenix, where she instructs students at the doctoral and master’s level in education and undergraduate students in English literature. She previously taught International English and second language composition as a professor at Penn State York. Fowler was also a principal at Panther Valley Elementary School and Cardinal Brennan Junior/Senior High School. She holds a Doctor of Education degree in education and linguistics from the Pennsylvania State University. She earned a master’s degree in English education from Millersville University and a bachelor’s degree in government and Russian from Franklin & Marshall College.

Michael Radzwilla, son of Mike and Barbara Radzwilla, Hanover Township, participated in this summer’s Boston University Tanglewood Institute (BUTI), a program of musical study and performance that is recognized internationally as an outstanding educational experience for young artists. Radzwilla, a junior at Hanover Area High School, has studied voice for four years. He was among 340 students selected from auditions across the country and abroad to work with members of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, Boston University faculty, and world-renowned visiting artists. Established in 1966 by the Boston University College of Fine Arts in conjunction with the Boston Symphony Orchestra, BUTI is the only program of its kind associated with one of the great symphony orchestras of the world.

Nataliya Gitman of Kingston has been awarded the Jane M. Klausman Women in Business scholarship. She is a junior majoring in international business and marketing at King’s College. Gitman will use the funding to help cover tuition costs associated with her study abroad experience this fall through the Alliance for Global Education at the Shanghai University of Finance and Economics in Shanghai, China. The Jane M. Klausman Women in Business scholarship, sponsored by Zonta International, is presented to women pursuing undergraduate business degrees who demonstrate outstanding potential in the field. To be awarded the scholarship, Gitman had to obtain letters of recommendation and write an essay describing her academic and professional goals, and how the scholarship would help her achieve them.

Sarah Bryski, a graduate of Hanover Area Junior/Senior High School, received a $4,000 scholarship from the 2008 Hugh Carcella Scholarship Fund of the United Steelworkers union. Bryski of Ashley plans to attend Elizabethtown College majoring in English, secondary education with a minor in political science. She serves as an Ashley Borough junior council person and was her high school’s representative to Junior Leadership Wilkes-Barre.

Kirby Anne Rinker, daughter of Dale and Barbara Rinker of Wilkes-Barre, was recognized as a member of Sigma Alpha Lambda, National Leadership and Honors Organization at the University of Pittsburgh. Sigma Alpha Lambda is dedicated to promoting and rewarding academic achievement and providing members with opportunities for community service, personal development and lifelong professional fulfillment. Rinker, a communications major, also completed the Emerging Leaders Certification Program her freshman year.

Beth Samantha Bennett, daughter of Buzz and Pat Bennett of Exeter, earned her Doctorate of Medicine from Pennsylvania State University College of Medicine. Bennett graduated summa cum laude from Wyoming Area Secondary Center in 2000. She graduated magna cum laude from the University of Pennsylvania in 2004, with a Bachelor of Arts in biochemistry and a Master of Science in chemistry. She was a Vagelos Scholar in the molecular life sciences and received several awards from the department of biological chemistry. She performed her master’s thesis work in the department of cancer biology and was published in a first author manuscript in Molecular Biology of the Cell in 2005. At Penn State College of Medicine, Bennett served as a four-year class officer and was involved in several student organizations. She was also a histology teaching assistant. She received the dean’s award for scholarly achievement and the Robert B. Spieth Scholarship Award for demonstrating promise in the field of oncology. She began her residency in pediatrics at the Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC in June 2008, where she plans to pursue a career in pediatric hematology/oncology.

Conor C. Harrington, son of John and Kathy Harrington of Dallas, was named the 2008 recipient of the Saint Michael’s College Scholarship and Service Book Award. The award recognizes students who demonstrate a commitment to volunteerism and leadership through community service. Recipients are high school juniors who are inductees of the National Honor Society or an equivalent honors organization. Harrington is a student at Holy Redeemer High School.

Robert C. Duffy, a graduate of Holy Redeemer High School, was announced a winner of a National Merit Scholarship financed by Bucknell University. Officials of each sponsor college select their winners from among finalists in the National Merit Scholarship Program. Awards provide $500-$2,000, annually, for up to four years of undergraduate study.
