DUNMORE — Five Pennsylvania Department of Transportation maintenance facilities in Luzerne County received the Salt Institute’s Safe and Sustainable Snowfighting award, which recognizes road-salt management and storage practices that protect motorists and the environment.
The Salt Institute, a national trade organization for both industrial and table salt suppliers, awarded 90 public safety organizations throughout the United States and Canada, 16 of which were in Pennsylvania, for effectively balancing public safety efforts with environmental consideration.
Maintenance hubs in Nuangola, Retreat, Sybertsville, Sugar Notch and Dupont were given the award. Other PennDOT maintenance facilities were located in Armstrong, Clarion and Northampton counties.
PennDOT used an average of more than 840,000 tons of salt in the previous five winters.
