WILKES-BARRE — Former correctional officer Edward Davis, 29, was sentenced in Luzerne County Court to five years probation on charges he had a sexual relationship with an inmate and smuggled a cell phone into the State Correctional Institution at Dallas.

State police at Wyoming charged Davis in December 2012 after he was caught with a cell phone concealed in his boot on Jan. 14, 2012, according to the criminal complaint.

During the investigation, state police said they found 100 letters Davis had written to the inmate. Most of the letters were sexually explicit, the complaint says.

Davis, represented by Attorney Ferris Webby, pleaded guilty in January to institutional sexual assault and contraband.

Judge Michael T. Vough sentenced Davis to five years probation.

Assistant District Attorney Jenny Roberts sought a prison sentence for Davis.

Davis will be required to register his address with authorities for 15 years under the state’s Megan’s Law.
