WILKES-BARRE — A woman found unconscious by city firefighters inside a burning house on Wyoming Street late Monday night has died, said fire officials and Luzerne County Coroner Bill Lisman on Tuesday.

Lisman identified the woman as 51-year-old Laurie Merritt.

Assistant Fire Chief Thomas Makar said firefighters responded to 276 Wyoming St. just before 11:30 p.m.

Flames and heavy smoke emitted from the house.

Makar said the woman was found unconscious in the attic. She was rushed to Wilkes-Barre General Hospital where she was pronounced dead in the emergency room at 12:22 a.m., Lisman said.

Makar said the fire was under control by midnight. He said the cause of the fire is under investigation by city fire inspector Capt. Alan Klapat and state police deputy fire marshal Trooper Ron Jarocha.

Lisman said an autopsy will be performed.
