What sun there was peeked only occasionally from behind thick clouds, but promised rain held off long enough for the 43rd annual West Pittston Cherry Blossom Festival to open in grand style Saturday afternoon.

Roy Speece, beloved coach of junior football in the borough for 40 years, reined over the festivities as Grand Marshal and West Pittston Mayor Tony Denisco received an award as Outstanding Citizen.

West Pittston “Piano Man” Lee Strubeck got the entertainment on the riverbank going at noon just before the Little Miss Cherry Blossom pageant.

The festival opens today at noon at its location on Susquehanna Avenue just off Firefighters Memorial Bridge and continues through 5 p.m. The lineup includes West Pittston’s Got Talent at 12:15, Damian the Magician at 1, David Blight Dancers at 1:30, Emerald Isle Step Dancers at 2:15, Beth Connor with Perfect Harmony School of Music at 3, and closing act Jeanne Zano at 4.

There will be plenty of food, refreshments, arts & crafts, and games.
