Applications are now available for the 2014 Tomato Festival Queen scholarship pageant.
Young women between the ages of 14 and 19 from the Greater Pittston and surrounding areas can compete at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 23 for the Tomato Festival Queen title. There will be prizes and gifts for all participants. The winner will receive a $500 cash college scholarship and a $250 cash college scholarship will be awarded to the first runner-up. Those not attending college may use the scholarship for educational purposes.
Scoring is based on an interview, stage performance and talent. The talent portion of the competition has a time limit of two minutes and a talent may include, but is not limited to, the following: a commercial for the festival, song, dance, etc.
All participants are invited to ride in the Tomato Festival Parade, which will take place at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 23. Participants must obtain a convertible or other type of car and driver. Contestants are asked to create a sign for each side of the car, which should include the contestant’s name, followed by “2014 Tomato Festival Queen Finalist.”
Applications are available at the Pittston City Hall, 35 Broad St., and The Greater Pittston Chamber of Commerce, Williams Street and Kennedy Boulevard, or by emailing the chairperson of the pageant, former Tomato Festival Queen Jamie Andrews, at firstname.lastname@example.org. Deadline for entry is Friday, Aug. 8.
Little Miss, Mister Contest
The Little Miss and Little Mister Tomato Contest will be held at 11 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 24. All contestants are asked to be at the festival band shell by 10:30 a.m.
The contests are open to girls and boys aged 2 to 6 years old. The categories will be judged with 50 points for beauty and 50 points for personality. The children are asked to wear something they would wear to a day at the Tomato Festival.
One winner will be chosen in each category with one runner-up. Entry fee is $5 and prizes will be awarded. Checks should be made payable to the Pittston Tomato Festival, Inc.
