Mohegan Sun Arena also due for inspections to its windows and concrete, official says.

WILKES-BARRE TWP. — While it waits for prices for inspections of the windows and concrete at the Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza, the board overseeing the 14-year-0ld facility agreed to spend up to $100,000 to inspect the roof.


The Luzerne County Convention Center Authority’s board accepted proposals Wednesday for the roof that is leaking. Board Chairwoman Donna Cupinski said three proposals were received.


“It is the age of the roof,” she replied to a question from Luzerne County Council Chairman Tim McGinley about the need for the inspection.


Robert Becker of NEPA Engineering was hired at a cost not to exceed $45,000 as part of the roof inspection. Mark Sobeck was hired as a consultant and inspector at a cost not to exceed $55,000.


Overall, the building is in good shape, said Rebecca Bonnevier, the arena’s general manager. But at the recommendation of Quad 3 Group, further inspections should be done, she said. An inspector should be hired for the pre-cast concrete, as well as a window specialist and someone to look at the metal panels on the exterior, she said. The costs for the services are yet to be determined, she said.


Bonnevier told the board the arena is in need of new computer servers, and three quotes were obtained from vendors. The board agreed to go with Synergistic Networks of Wilkes-Barre. It submitted the lowest price of $14,260 and provided an installation estimate of $4,000.


The total cost is not to exceed $20,000, but if it does, new quotes will be obtained for the board’s next meeting at noon on June 12.


Another service offered to and accepted by the board was for free. It agreed to allow for thermal imaging of its electrical equipment through its insurer Chubb. The service costs around $20,000. It looks at how much power is being drawn and detects overheating that could indicate a fault, explained Edward Miller of Eastern Insurance.


“It’s a loss-prevention tool,” he told the board.


Miller also provided costs for builder’s risk insurance regarding the proposed 20,000-square-foot expansion planned at the arena. The costs range from $4,200 for a $2 million project, to $11,000 for a $5 million project and $15,400 for a $7 million project. The cost would be added to the arena’s existing policy to avoid having two deductibles.


Cupinski had anticipated the completion of a $20,000 feasibility study on the proposed expansion for release to the board. But consultant Restaurant Advisory Services requires additional time. “They’re still working with Quad 3 on some of the specifications,” she said.
