WILKES-BARRE — City police on Tuesday charged a former Times Leader employee with stealing five laptop computers from the newspaper.
Gregory J. Betts, 45, of Tunkhannock, was charged with a single felony count of receiving stolen property. The charge was filed with District Judge Martin Kane in Wilkes-Barre and mailed to Betts. A preliminary hearing is scheduled on Sept. 11.
According to the criminal complaint, five laptops were stolen between July 18 and July 21 from The Times Leader’s office on North Main Street. The laptops were recovered by police and Betts’ brother, Steve Betts, at Host Inn in Plains Township.
Gregory Betts had been staying at the motel before being admitted to a hospital on July 23. He asked his brother to retrieve his property at the motel, adding there were items there that did not belong to him, according to the complaint. Fearing his brother was involved in a theft, Steve Betts turned the laptops over to police.
Using serial numbers, police verified the laptops belonged to The Times Leader.
Betts worked at The Times Leader for a short time; he previously worked as a circulation sales manager at Times-Shamrock Communications.
