WILKES-BARRE TWP. — Three vehicles were destroyed by fire Wednesday evening in a Walmart parking lot.
Firefighters from Ashley and Wilkes-Barre Township responded to the Walmart store off Highland Park Boulevard for a vehicle fire reported to Luzerne County 911 at 6:15 p.m., but not before the flames had engulfed an SUV had spread to two nearby cars.
Wilkes-Barre Township police said there was nothing they could do other than block off traffic and wait for firefighters to arrive.
Ashley firefighters arrived at 6:27 p.m., according to a 911 supervisor. Wilkes-Barre Township’s fire apparatus arrived several minutes later.
Dave Jupin, 53, of Daytona Beach, Fla., said he was walking from the store back to his 2013 Sonata when he saw smoke billowing from the white SUV parked next to it. “I was going to go move it, but everybody said, ‘Stay back, stay back.’ I thought about it and said, yeah, they’re right,” Jupin said.
The flames spread to Jupin’s Sonata and then to a white Ford parked next to the Sonata.
Jupin said he’s in the area for training with Air Products and Chemicals in Wilkes-Barre, and the Sonata is a corporate rental car. “What a waste,” Jupin said.
“No one was hurt, though, so that’s a blessing.”
