WILKES-BARRE — A busy holiday travel season is expected for the Wyoming Valley, as AAA expects over 50,000 area residents will travel over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend.

AAA Mid-Atlantic estimates more than 53,500 Wilkes-Barre area residents will travel 50 miles or more from home over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend, according to a news release.

The Thanksgiving holiday travel period is defined as Wednesday, Nov. 23, to Sunday, Nov. 27.

Of those travelers, 89 percent will get to their holiday destinations by car and will likely enjoy the lowest gas prices since 2008.

“This Thanksgiving, we will see the most Americans carving out time to visit friends and family since 2007,” said Jana L. Tidwell, spokeswoman for AAA Mid-Atlantic, in a news release. “Most Wilkes-Barre area residents will take a tried and true holiday road trip, thanks to gas prices that are holding just under $2.45 per gallon.”

Nationally, AAA projects 48.7 million Americans will journey 50 miles or more from home this Thanksgiving, an increase of one million travelers compared with last year. This projection represents a 1.9 percent increase over 2015, and the most Thanksgiving travelers since 2007.
