Jury determines man’s death homicide

WILKES-BARRE — A Luzerne County jury has ruled the September 2011 death of a Hazle Township man was a homicide and implicated his girlfriend in the killing.


The six-member jury deliberated for about a half hour Tuesday, before determining Matthew Ryan Gailie’s death was intentionally caused, allegedly by his 29-year-old girlfriend, Jessica Alinski.


The rare proceeding, called a coroner’s inquest, was held Monday and today to determine Gailie’s manner of death. Gailie died of a gunshot wound to the face on Sept. 2, 2011.


Acting Coroner William Lisman said he will change the manner of death on Gailie’s death certificate from undetermined to homicide.


It will be up to the District Attorney’s Office to make a determination on any charges against Alinski.
