A fire reported around 3:35 p.m. Wednesday damaged a vacant house at 46 Harkins Lane, Wilkes-Barre, behind Dodson Elementary School. Fire Chief Jay Delaney said there were heavy flames and smoke on the second floor of the house when firefighters arrived. It was brought under control around 4:10 p.m. Firefighters prevented the flames from spreading to adjacent houses; one just a few away and the other separated by a driveway. “No doubt it was very tense here,” Delaney said. The city fire inspector was on the scene to look for a cause. A man who was visiting in the neighborhood and did not want to give his name said he saw smoke and called 911. “It’s supposed to be empty, but people come and go in this place,” he said. Two state constables were on scene with a warrant to serve on a person who had lived at the address.
